Art Teacher's Page

Hello Parents and Students! I am so excited about this year's art program, and I hope you are as well. Throughout the year students will be studying various aspects of art history, learning different art skills and techniques, learning about the elements of art and principles of design, as well as working on their own self expression and creativity. I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Our Focus This Month: Color and Texture

Here's a brief overview of the current studies and projects each grade has recently worked on or is currently working on. (updated 10-6-08)

Kindergarten: Warm and Cool Color paintings: Students are becoming familiar with the differences between cool and warm colors. They will first create a warm color painting and then a cool color painting. We will then combine the two in our Bear Den Collages.

1st Grade: Texture Leaf Rubbings:Students created leaf rubbings and discussed the changing of the seasons.

Portraiture: Students are learning about portraiture and becoming familiar with a few famous portraits such as the Mona Lisa, Paul Revere and Van Gogh. They have created self portraits and will paint Ice Age portraits next. During this project we will also review cool and warm colors.

2nd Grade: Landscape Drawings: Students are learning about landscapes and becoming familiar with the landscapes of VanGogh, El Greco and Thomas Cole. They have created their night time landscape and are currently working on their day time landscapes. Next we will look at Hokusai's wave prints and create a textured waterscape print.

3rd Grade: Collage: Students have just finished their Matisse inspired collages and are currently working on their animal collages. First they chose an animal with a distinct pattern and texture to replicate. They then cut out silhouettes of their animal and attached them. Students are eager to show off their work to their families during their Discovery Night this month.

4th Grade: Rose Windows: Students are beginning a unit on Medieval Architecture. Our first project centers on radial symmetry and becoming familar with several Gothic Cathedrals including Notre Dame. Students just finished creating their own radial "rose window" drawings.

Gargoyles: Students are studying the history of gargoyles as well as creating their own clay gargoyles.

5th Grade: Mosaic Collage: Students looked at ancient Roman mosaics for inspiration and are now piecing together their own intricate mosaic collages.

Renaissance Unit: Next we will be looking at castles and creating two point perspective castle drawings.

6th Grade: Color Wheels: Students started with primary colors and mixed secondary colors as well as tertiary colors. They then cut out each color in a shape of their choice and arranged them on a black background.

Texture Relief: Students will be looking at relief sculpture from various cultures next. They will then create their own relief sculptures using several metal tooling techniques.

7th Grade:Visual Puns: Students worked on their visual communication skills by creating clever visual puns. They took a word or phrase that could be represented by two visuals and morphed the two. Some fun and interesting ideas included: Horse Fly, Fire Ant, Turtle Dove and Crab Apple.

Still Life Drawings: Students are currently working on their technical drawing skills by drawing a fall themed still life. We are looking at the work of Cezanne and Van Gogh. Their main focus will be value, texture and color representation.
