Carbon Valley Academy's Leveled Library
CVA strives to provide our students with a complete educational foundation based upon proven methods of instruction. CVA accomplishes this through the use of a literacy instruction best practice - a balanced reading program using a leveled library.
Balanced Reading
A balanced reading program is made up of three pieces:
- reading to children daily
- reading with children
- shared reading - teacher reading and discussing text with the whole class
- guided reading - small groups of children reading the same book with an instructor’s assistance
- reading by children - independent reading
Guided reading with various titles is especially important in grades K-2 since there are so many different levels of readers during these formative years. Some readers need more focus on one skill such as decoding, while others need more on other skills like comprehension. It's nearly impossible to address all levels of readers equally during whole-class language arts instruction.
Even though students are ability grouped during language arts, if most of the class grasps a concept or skill, the instruction moves on. Guided reading allows teachers to work with smaller groups of students who didn’t initially master the skill or concept and just need more practice.
Leveled Library Program
CVA has added a very important resource to our main library - a leveled library. The leveled library is a resource center of sets of leveled books that the teachers can use with small groups of students to provide instruction in reading skills, fluency, and comprehension through guided reading in addition to the instruction provided during the 70 minute language arts block.
