WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering that organizes fathers and father figures in order to provide positive male role models for the students and to enhance school security.
Register and schedule a day to volunteer
Background
WATCH D.O.G.S.® is the father involvement initiative of the NATIONAL CENTER FOR FATHERING that was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR. Moore wanted to help prevent violence from occurring at his children's school or at any school. The first program was launched at George Elementary in Springdale, AR, the school of Moore's oldest child. Today, more than2127 active programs in 40 states and New Zealand participate in WATCH D.O.G.S.®
How Watch D.O.G.S.® Works
WATCH D.O.G.S.®, a K-12 program, invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer at least one day all day at their child's/student's school during the school year. Individuals sign up at a kick-off event such as a "Dads and Kids Pizza Night" or in the office at any time throughout the school year. The program is overseen by a "Top Dog" volunteer who partners with the school administrator to coordinate scheduling and identify opportunities for Watch DOGS to provide assistance at the school. Watch DOG volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher's guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling.
Watch D.O.G.S.® at Carbon Valley Academy
The WATCH D.O.G.S.® program started at Carbon Valley Academy in 2009. Dads or other father figures who are interested in participating can sign up for any date they like on the CVA Watch DOGS calendar or by contacting the "Top Dog" directly.
A typical day spent volunteering involves coming to Carbon Valley Academy early for a brief orientation from the CVA Watch DOGS Coordinator or "Top Dog". After orientation, the Watchdog's day will consist of assisting with the drop off drive line, spending the day accompanying his student and assisting each of the teachers, having lunch and recess with his student, and assisting with the pick-up drive line at the end of the day.
A picture of the Watchdog will be taken with his student and hung in the School on the Watch DOGS "Brag Board." Additionally, Watch DOGS volunteers are announced to the school on the day they volunteer and are recognized, by name, in the weekly Friday Flyer.
Additional information is also available at the or by contacting CVA's "Top Dog".
